Last July, the final remaining elite UFA who remained unsigned was defenceman Sheldon Souray. Everyone speculated as to which team would land him. However, Souray's final destination came as quite a surprise--as did the reason behind it. For several weeks after the July 1st free agent signing period commenced, the Sheldon Souray Sweepstakes had intrigued everyone. Speculation had centered mostly around the Kings, Sharks, Ducks, Devils, Rangers, etc. But this stallion (offensively at least) went to a "dark horse" candidate--the Edmonton Oilers. One could argue that Souray being an Alberta native, combined with Oilers GM Kevin Lowe's ability and need to spend big bucks to land a thoroughbred UFA, would have made the Oilers one of the favorites all along. Since Souray's wife Angelica Bridges is a Los Angeles based actress, there was no Mrs. Souray to accompany him to the Great White North. Thus, Bridges, who is used to spending prolonged periods of time away from her husband, didn't feel the need to ask Souray to choose between her and the City of Edmonton. Where Kevin Lowe had previously failed with Mrs. Pronger and Mrs. Nylander (both of whom were unhappy about having their families living in such a remote northern location), he never had to worry about with Souray. Although most knowledgeable hockey fans should have known this, we never saw it coming. In fact, as an offshoot of the Souray situation, Kevin Lowe may have brilliantly hatched an effective new strategy: target the most talented, maritally non-attached free agents in the NHL. He could further enhance this strategy by turning Edmonton into a singles haven. Don't be surprised if the next contract he signs is with Club Med, before resuming his pursuit of elite hockey talent. Let's not underestimate Kevin Lowe again. He's a great competitor, who may have learned how to turn a liability into an asset.
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada will move quickly to ratify the new North American trade pact, Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Saturday, a day after the United States agreed to lift tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. U.S. President Donald Trump had imposed the global “Section 232” tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum in March 2018 on both Canada and Mexico on national security grounds, invoking a 1962 Cold War-era trade law. “Now that that big obstacle is lifted, full steam ahead,” she said, without saying when the agreement would be presented to parliament, which closes down in June ahead of an October national election. “I hope all members of the house will support this agreement,” she added. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Friday he would meet with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Ottawa on May 30 to discuss “advancing” ratification. While several U.S. Democrats applauded removal of the tariffs, some on Friday said USMCA was not yet ready for their support. “When it comes to the new agreement, House Democrats continue to have a number of substantial concerns related to labor, environment, enforcement, and access to affordable medicines provisions. Those issues still need to be remedied,” said U.S. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal on Friday. Freeland said Canada was in the process of reaching out to American Democrats to allay their concerns. “We have been meeting with many leading Democrats to talk to them about the new NAFTA,” Freeland said. Despite the breakthrough on tariffs and the USMCA agreement last year, Freeland said Canada was still worried about U.S. “I am still concerned about U.S. I think it would be naive for anyone to think that there is any kind of permanent safety or security. The reality is that this U.S.
A good real estate purchase contract usually contains numerous details and information concerning the property so it must be treated very seriously. A good real estate purchase contract usually contains numerous details and information concerning the property so it must be treated very seriously. A good real estate contract usually holds huge amounts of information and in some jurisdiction it must be in written form to be enforceable. British Columbia has an odd tradition of inviting the lawyer only at the final stage of the contract signing. Basically the lawyer signs the contract and only after that reviews it. Needless to say that it is better to avoid this tradition and consult a lawyer right from the beginning. Ontario is one of the best places to buy or sell a home. Due to the civil law traditions the rules for real estate in Quebec can be very different in details of the contract. So in this province it is even more important to find an experienced local real estate lawyer who is familiar with Quebec real estate mortgages, amortization terms, repayment frequencies and prepayment options, along with their respective merits and demerits. In Alberta the contracts have flexible terms and conditions, while the whole process is considered to be very complicated. Also if you are purchasing property through an agent most probably you will be offered one of the standardized contracts used in the province. In Saskatchewan the brokers use the local standard forms for the reel estate purchase contracts. Also the Law Society of Saskatchewan is active in establishing standardized conditions and terms for purchases done with the help of real estate lawyers. The real estate purchase contracts in Nova Scotia must be in written form. The whole process is regulated by the Nova Scotia Real Estate Association, which has a number of various standard forms of agreements used for the purchase transactions. In Nova Scotia apart from a lawyers review of your contract you may also add a "lawyer review clause" to the contract to protect your interests.
